How to Fix a Diesel Tiller That Won't Start: A Technical Guide for 173F and 186F Engines

By Chongqing Spring Machinery July 3rd, 2026 164 views
As a professional manufacturer of the world-renowned 173F and 186F series, Chongqing Spring Machinery (SBL) has compiled this technical troubleshooting guide to help you identify and fix the most common starting issues.

Step 1: Check for Air in the Fuel System (Bleeding the Lines)

Air is the #1 enemy of a diesel engine. If air bubbles enter the fuel lines—usually after the machine has run out of fuel or sat idle for too long—the injection pump cannot build enough pressure to fire the injector.

The Fix:

  1. Loosen the nut on the high-pressure fuel line (near the injector).
  2. Set the throttle to the "Run" position and pull the recoil starter (or use electric start) until fuel without air bubbles begins to spurt out.
  3. Tighten the nut and try starting again.

Step 2: Inspect Fuel Quality and Filtration

Contaminated or "stale" diesel fuel will clog the precision nozzle of your 186F engine. If your fuel looks cloudy or has water droplets at the bottom, your engine will not start.

The Fix:

  1. Drain the fuel tank completely.
  2. Replace the fuel filter element (this should be done every 200 hours of operation).
  3. Refill with fresh, high-quality diesel fuel.

Step 3: Verify Proper Compression

Diesel engines require intense heat generated by compression to ignite the fuel. If your valves are leaking or the piston rings are worn, you won't have enough "squeeze" for ignition.

The Fix:

  1. Decompression Lever: Ensure the decompression lever is functioning and clicking back into place after you pull the starter.
  2. Valve Clearance: Check the intake and exhaust valve clearances. On a cold 186F engine, both should be set to approximately 0.15mm.
  3. Oil-Bath Air Filter: A clogged air filter starves the engine of oxygen. Clean the wire mesh and replace the oil in the filter bowl.

Step 4: The Injector "Click" Test

If the engine is turning over but not firing, the injector nozzle may be carboned up or stuck.

The Fix: Remove the injector from the cylinder head but keep it connected to the high-pressure line. Aim it into the air (away from your face!) and pull the starter. You should see a fine, mist-like spray and hear a distinct "creak" or "click" sound. If it drips or doesn't spray, you need a Genuine SBL Injector Replacement.

Step 5: Cold Weather Starting Secrets

Diesel fuel thickens in cold temperatures, and the engine block becomes harder to heat through compression.

The Fix:

  1. The Oil Trick: Many farmers add a few drops of clean engine oil into the air intake (or specialized starting port) to help increase temporary compression.
  2. Pre-heat: If your machine is equipped with an electric starter, ensure the battery is fully charged, as cold engines require more cranking power.

Why Use Genuine SBL Spare Parts?

When troubleshooting doesn't work, it's often because a core component like the Fuel Injection Pump or Piston Ring Set has reached the end of its life.

Using generic, low-quality parts will lead to repeated failures and potential engine damage. At Chongqing Spring Machinery, we supply 100% original 173F, 178F, 186F, and 192F engine parts, including:

  • Precision-machined Fuel Injectors
  • High-pressure Injection Pumps
  • Full Gasket Kits and Valve Sets
  • Standard and Oversized Piston Kits
